How to run a proper speed test and interpret the results
A speed test only shows your true connection speed if run correctly. Follow this guide to get an accurate reading and understand what the numbers mean.
Before you test
- Connect your device directly to the router with an ethernet cable if possible
- Close all streaming, downloads, and background apps on every device in your home
- Run the test during peak hours (7–10pm) and off-peak (10am) to compare
Running the test
Go to fast.com or speedtest.net. Select a server in your nearest city and click Go.
Understanding the results
| Metric | What it means | Expected on Netfizz |
|---|---|---|
| Download | Speed at which data comes to your device | Near your plan speed |
| Upload | Speed at which data leaves your device | Equal to download (symmetrical) |
| Ping / Latency | Round-trip time to the test server | < 10ms local, < 50ms international |
| Jitter | Variation in latency | < 5ms |
My speed is lower than my plan — why?
Wi-Fi always delivers less than the full speed because of interference, distance, and the overhead of the wireless protocol. For accurate readings, always test over ethernet. If your ethernet speed is consistently 20% below your plan speed, contact us and we will investigate the line.
